Cane 141 : The Story So Far...
2007: Cane 141 is now the music of Mike Smalle and his many accomplices. Hailing from Galway in the west of Ireland, he has written and produced four albums in twice as many years. He has collaborated with such musical luminaries as Mark Eitzel (American Music Club) Sean O'Hagan ( The High Llamas/Microdisney/Stereolab) and Cristian Vogel of Super_Collider fame. A number of radio sessions have also been recorded over the years, most notably a John Peel session in 2001.
The CD "Lost At Sea" was released in November '07 and is available from all good record shops and directly from the cane141.com website.
2006: Cane 141 collaborated with Roisin Coyle for the "Lost At Sea" installation, which they brought to New York.
2005: The third cane 141 album Moon Pool was released by London label Exceptional Records. The album was written and recorded by Mike at Neropolis studios in Peterswell. This also happens to be the home of cane141 manager Pat Neary who kindly facilitated the recordings. The group headlined a night of electronic music at The Galway Arts Festival in July with Max Tundra and played at The Electric Picnic in September. Moon Pool was widely acclaimed and ended up as One of the Irish albums of the year by The Irish Independent and The Irish Times. It has recently been nominated as one of the best top ten albums released in 2005 for The Choice Music Prize.
2004: Slimmed down to a 3 piece with Mike, Sandra and colm. Cane 141 released the ep Flutters For Cuts on Japanese label Play. This ep featured a beautiful reworking of 33:45 by Cristian Vogel of Cristian Vogel and Super-Collider fame. They played two shows in London at the vibe bar and the Chris Coco night at the Heavenly Social club and recorded a 5 track session for John Kennedy at XFM. The ep received glowing reviews from dj magazine. Logo, jockey Slut and ID magazine.
2003: Sugarfoot was released as an internet only single. Featuring the voice of Michael Cloud Divine, it was championed by BBC radio 1's Chris Coco who included it on his Blue Room Compilation. Cane 141 were joined by Sandra Friel on Accordion and organ.
2001: Cane 141 with a collection of 11 songs recorded their second album Garden Tiger Moth- A more refined pop album with lots of old analogue synths, retro charity shop keyboards ,guitars and bits of found sounds. It was recorded by Paul B. and produced by Paul And Mike. It was released by Décor records(an imprint of Setanta records) which was a label run by Chris Metzler Again it received favourable press and the group played a handful of shows in London, Paris and Madrid. In London the group recorded sessions for John Peel, Gideon Coe and XFM. They were joined for these live outings by Ronan Burke on Keys and Colm Hogan on drums. Following this was the beginning of a series of collaborative releases. In the summer of 2001 The New Day Parade ep was released. It featured The Horror co-written by Mike and Mark Eitzel and a reworking of The Look Out kid by Sean O' Hagan of The High Llamas and Stereolab. It received glowing reviews and became Guardian single of the week. Next up was a collaborative 7" release on the Track And Field label with Patrick fitzgerald (Kitchens of distinction/ stephen hero.) This saw both groups playing shows in London, Dublin and their home town Galway.
1997: Cane 141 recorded their first album Scene From 6a.m. in the summer of 1997 and released it the following summer on local label Secret Records.
The album was lauded by the N.M.E. Uncut and John Peel and saw the band playing shows in Barcelona in the beautiful courtyard of Place del rei, London,Paris and at the Austin texas festival SXSW.
' Scene' was a collection of 9 songs written by Mike Smalle and Gerard Connolly and played by cane 141 who were then Mike on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Gerard on vocals and guitars, Shane Burke on bass guitar and Paul Maye on drums. The whole sesson was beautifully captured by Kilkenny's finest engineer and producer Paul Brennan. Soon after its release Paul Maye left and was replaced by Paul Brennan. Cane 141 re-entered the studio and recorded the more experimental sounding e.p. More New Friends.
